A Seat at the Table
An art exhibit celebrating National Diversity Awareness Month, amplifying marginalized voices and paying homage to Shirley Chisholm — the first African American woman elected to Congress.
AUG 3 – AUG 28, 2024

Buttonwoods Museum is proud to announce our exhibit in August 2024, “A Seat at the Table,” in celebration of National Diversity Awareness Month.
Inspired by Shirley Chisholm’s powerful quote, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair,” this exhibit aims to amplify the voices and experiences of marginalized community members. Artists bring their unique perspectives and creativity to this important exhibit, highlighting the diverse voices and stories within our community. Together, let’s create a space where everyone has a seat at the table.
The exhibit pays homage to Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman in Congress (1968) and the first woman and African American to seek the presidential nomination from a major political party (1972).
This exhibit opens Saturday August 3, through Saturday, August 31. It is on view during regular museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 am – 5 pm, and Sunday 12 pm – 5 pm. The exhibit reception will be Thursday, August 8 from 5 pm – 7 pm.
It is sponsored by a generous grant from the Creative County Initiative. Also with thanks to Cummings Foundation and Essex County Community Foundation. This is a free event.
