Pick from the following themes and a member of our education team will come speak to your group. Cost $60/hour; each program lasts approximately 1 hour.
RIVER HISTORY
Rolling on the River
The Merrimack River has played a major role in shaping human industry in the Merrimack Valley, from the Pennacook’s usage of the river for trade and transport to the harnessing of the river’s power during industrialization in the 19th century.
COLONIAL HISTORY
Early American Life
Hear the stories of early colonists like John Ward, the Saltonstalls, and Hannah Dustin and her sister, Elizabeth Emerson. From the Bloody Sunday Attack to the Throat Distemper Epidemic, life in the frontier settlement of Haverhill was challenging and sometimes violent.
NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY
Pentucket on the Merrimack
Learn about the history and culture of the Pennacook people — the first residents of the Merrimack Valley. Participants will have the opportunity to examine stone tools from the Luce Archaeology Collection.
INDUSTRIAL HISTORY
Queen Slipper City
Discover the history of shoe-making in Haverhill, from its earliest beginning in the 1600s, to the transition from cottage industry to factories in the 1800s, and to the decline of that industry in the late-20th century.
WOMENS’S HISTORY
Missionary Women of Haverhill
Hear the story of Ann Hasseltine Judson and Harriet Atwood Newell, former students of Bradford Academy and the first female American missionaries. Their incredible tale includes romance, tragedy, kings and princes, a case of mistaken identity, and pirates!
Program at the Buttonwoods: Choose one of the above To-Go Lecture themes and add either an art-making activity, family history project, or another hands-on component to the lecture. Program will also include time exploring exhibit galleries.
Cost: Additonal $8/person
